Solar water heating systems are very simple. They consist of a hot water storage tank, a solar collector that absorbs the sun’s (free) energy, a back-up energy source, a pump, and controls. The system is also simple in operation; heat is gathered in the solar collector; the heat is transferred indirectly to the water supply; and stored into the tank.
The systems use a glycol-water antifreeze mixture to prevent freezing. With the simplicity of the system, operating and maintenance cost are very low about $2 a month. Solar Hot water systems carry a bigger up front cost than an electric or fossil fuel heater, but after that initial cost you will be actually making money with free hot water. To calculate an approximate payback time, deduct any applicable rebates and then take 20% off your current utility bill for hot water, then divide the residual cost of the system by that figure.
SJ Johnson can also incorporate solar hot water into radiant heat for a very comfortable heat source. We can also add a solar hot water system to your swimming pool that will add an additional two months to your pool usage.
